The Internet and popularity of social networks are changing the way that sports journalism is reported. ESPN has made a habit of showing Twitter messages (also known as Tweets) of NBA players on its homepage. So, it's no surprise that a few idiots in the world have decided to imitate these high-profile members of the athletic community. They think it's hilarious. Well, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Davone Bess is one player who isn't laughing.

Kenny Zuckerman, Bess' agent, has told authorities that Bess plans to press charges against a person impersonating him on Twitter, a social messaging Web site. The user, "Lambo-Weezy," challenged Chris Johnson, the speedy Tennessee Titan, to a race. It definitely got attention on the site, proving how gullible people are.

Can you blame Bess for seeking legal action? It's one thing for a person to get a hold of a MySpace or Facebook password and change its status for a chuckle. But Bess has a lot at stake when it comes to public perception. If you think football organizations don't monitor the status of those networks, think again. The Philadelphia Eagles flat-out fired an employee for insulting the team on his Facebook profile. Imagine what could happen to Bess if he were to go off on Twitter. He cannot afford to have someone besmirch his name.

This offseason has brought a lot of legal confusion to the Dolphins. Randy Starks has his issues, Vontae Davis is having to clear up an incident with the Champaign (Ill.) Police Department and now Bess is dealing with this.

It hasn't been said whether Bess alerted Twitter to the impostor, which may have been the easiest thing to do, but it seems like Bess wants to prove a point. You can't just go around screwing with a person's life and pretending to be him or her. There are consequences for it. Hopefully, this person will learn that. It's a shame that he or she will have to the hard way.
