Richard Smith is the Miami Dolphins new defensive coordinator. Smith has been the Lion's assistant head coach/linebackers coach the past two seasons.

It is believed that new Dolphins head coach Nick Saban completed negotiations with Smith while both were attending the NFL Scouting Combine. Smith had originally interviewed with Saban at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama this past January.

Saban and Smith worked on the same Houston Oiler's staff in 1988 and 1989 as secondary coach and special teams/assistant tight ends coach, respectively. Saban wanted to name an assistant who was familiar with his coaching philosophy.

In addition, coach Saban also announced the assignments of several coaches:
Derek Dooley - tight ends coach
George Edwards - linebackers coach
Travis Jones - assistant defensive line coach
Will Muschamp - assistant head coach/defense
Dan Quinn - defensive line coach
Bobby Williams - running backs coach

Among his responsibilities, Muschamp will work with the team's safeties and the nickel package.
