If the owners and players union do not reach a new agreement by the end of today, Gus Frerotte will be released. That likely won't be the only roster-trimming maneuver made by the Miami Dolphins if things stay in the present state.

The Dolphins are currently $1.3 million dollars over the $94.5 million salary cap that is in place for the 2006 season. That means that they will have to slash salaries in order to get cap compliant, and Gus Frerotte's hefty $4.38 million cap number would likely be the first in line for the slaughter. However, Frerotte would likely only be the first of several salary cap maneuvers that Miami would have to make in order to become a significant player in free agency and still have enough money left over to sign its draft picks.

Players like Drew Brees and Kevin Mawae will likely command a hefty salary, so the Dolphins will need to clear as much cap room as possible in order to land these and other players that are currently on their wishlist. That is why it is imperative that a new collective bargaining agreement is reached. A new deal would also signify a increase in the current salary cap for the 2006 season, and any such increase would make the Miami Dolphins go from a cap casualty to a serious player in this year's free agent market.
