The Dolphins may have picked up a true diamond in the rough this past week. One of the various Miami Dolphins free agents signed this past week is a ball-hawking, speedy cornerback who was projected to be drafted in the fourth or fifth round before injuring his knee during a "Pro Day" workout in March.

Shirdonya Mitchell - a converted wide receiver who played cornerback and returned kicks for the University of Missouri - was signed by Nick Saban despite the fact that he is in the midst of rehabilitating a torn ACL and LCL. Mitchell, who has posted sub 4.4 forty yard dash speed and can bench press 225 pounds nearly 20 times, is being dubbed as a "good risk" by the Dolphins head coach. Saban is prepared to hold Mitchell out for an entire year if need be, even though he could be ready to play as early as August of this year. According to what the coach has seen in tapes, Mitchell has excellent ball skills and is well-suited to cover the deep ball.

If Shirdonya Mitchell works out and ends up being a real player, he will be a welcomed addition to a Dolphins secondary that just lost Patrick Surtain - one of the top 3 cornerbacks in the NFL.
