Coach Nick Saban has opened the competition for starting quarterback between AJ Feeley and Gus Frerotte. Saban said the starter will be "whoever plays the best." It appears Saban does not give Feeley an edge based on the cost of acquiring him from the Philadelphia Eagles last year.

Frerotte may actually have the inside track to be the Dolphins starting quarterback this season. According to Saban, Frerotte has the advantage right now "because he has a lot of knowledge and experience in this system." Frerotte is very familiar with the new system the Dolphins will use under new offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. Both were with the Minnesota Vikings the past 2 seasons.

Feeley must show that he is better than average after showing glimpses of greatness in 2004. He finished the year with a below-average 61.7 passer rating, completing 53.7 percent of his passes with 11 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 11 games.
