Was Rick Spielman forced out of the Miami Dolphins organization? Probably, but who cares. It's a bit unusual for a GM to walk away from a guaranteed contract that would have paid him through next year. However, I guess resigning looks better on his resume than being bought out and fired.

One thing is obvious, this was no "big deal" for the Miami Dolphins. Spielman didn't even get a full blown press conference to announce his retirement. If that's not evidence of his diminished roll within the organization, then I don't know what is. I'm assuming that the only reason Rick Spielman was retained by head coach Nick Saban is because Saban did not have a staff in place to scout college players this past year. He was busy coaching the LSU Tigers. This means that he needed Spielman's data that he and his staff has accumulated over the past year. I doubt that Spielman had any real input in this year's draft other than to simply present Saban with his data.

In any case, Rick Spielman is now officially out. As one humorous Miami Dolphins fan put it "the third stooge is finally gone" (the other two being Jay Fiedler and Dave Wannstedt). Good luck in your future ventures, Mr. Spielman. You weren't as bad as you were made out to be (but you weren't all that good either).
