Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Tim Bowens was waived after failing a physical. The team then announced the highly-regarded veteran was planning to retire. "Tim talked to me and said he wanted to retire as a Dolphin, and we wanted to accommodate his request," Dolphins coach Nick Saban said in a statement released by the team.

Bowens played in only 2 contests during 2004 because of a herniated disc in his back. The 11 year veteran was hoping to return in 2005, but his health has not improved.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus said Bowens is not retiring officially yet, but acknowledged that the player would never play again. The 6 foot 4 inch, 325 pound Bowens was the last active Dolphin coached by the legendary Don Shula.

Miami signed free agent defensive tackle Keith Traylor last month to counter the loss of Bowens.
