More questions than answers greet Parcells

So Bill Parcells is now aboard the Miami Dolphins' ship as executive vice president in charge of football operations.

Isn't that a little like rowing out to assume command of the Titanic just after it hit the iceberg?

Obviously not. Parcells is a smart -- if not always congenial -- man, and the odds are slim that he would cast his lot with a hopeless loser.

This year's 1-14 Dolphins have been hopeful losers. A number of their losses were close, their best running back blew out his knee, their best receiver was traded away, their quarterback was sidelined by a concussion, and they now have the No. 1 pick in the draft.

Still, the Tuna will have some tough football operations-type questions to answer, and soon.

There were fewer dilemmas in Atlanta, which makes it somewhat surprising that Parcells spurned Arthur Blank and embraced Wayne Huizenga.

Atlanta doesn't have the inconvenience of an incumbent coach, which means Parcells could have brought in his own guy. Or maybe even have made himself the guy.

The Falcons' quarterback situation isn't unsettled -- it's bleak. There is not even a John Beck around with potential, and so that position will almost have to be an Atlanta priority in the draft.

It's different in Miami, where Cam Cameron has presided over what could wind up as a 1-15 season. Still, Cameron was dealt an awful hand by fate, so maybe he deserves another shot. Either way, it's doubtful that Parcells will get caught up in sentimentality.

Nor will he shrink from dealing that top draft pick if he thinks he can leverage it for a better team.
Arkansas running back Darren McFadden will likely be the No. 1 choice next spring, but do the Dolphins really need another featured running back? Not if Ronnie Brown can come back from his torn ACL.

So how about a quarterback, maybe a Brian Brohm, Colt Brennan or Matt Ryan?

Hard to say. Rookie Beck was something less than spectacular in his short tenure as a starter, but the NFL is full of solid QBs who stunk as first-year apprentices.

The list of free agents contains some intriguing possibilities, but no superstars.

One also must wonder how even a hot prospect like Brohm or Brennan would fare operating behind the Dolphins' porous 2007 offensive line.

The team needs blockers. It needs help in the secondary and on the interior of the defensive line. It needs depth almost everywhere. If Parcells could get a serviceable veteran or two and a lower first-round pick for a shot at McFadden, it might be too tempting to pass up.

There's no way the Dolphins can get worse. That, alone, is a plus for Parcells. That, and the weather.
