As I sat on my couch watching reruns of the NFL combine on the NFL Network (what a great channel!) I got to catch a glimpse of young Travis Daniels working out for scouts. The commentators mentioned how this kid was big enough and talented enough to play safety in the NFL even though he was a cornerback at LSU. It was then that I realized just how good of a move Nick Saban made by bringing in one of his own LSU products into the Miami Dolphins' fold.

Now I'm not going to pretend that I have the trained eye of an NFL scout and that I could tell just how good Travis Daniels is going to be based on some combine clips. What I will say is that he's a big kid (6'2'' 194 lbs.) and he seems to have soft hands. I have also read that he has solid instincts and good mind for understanding the game. Further still, his biggest vote of confidence comes from the Miami Dolphins head coach who recruited this South Florida standout, watched him develop at LSU, and thought enough of Daniels to use a 4th round draft pick on him.

With the departure of Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Surtain, the injury to second year cornerback Will Poole, and the overall lack of depth and talent at the safety position, Travis Daniels should have plenty of chances to shine as a rookie. If he's as good as Saban seems to think he is don't be surprised to see him starting at either cornerback or safety when regular season begins in September.
