Miami Dolphins head coach Nick Saban publicly chided VP of Media Relations, Harvey Greene, because he failed to place A.J. Feeley and Gus Frerotte side by side on the depth chart that was released yesterday. Saban is clearly trying to send a message to the media, the fans, and the players. The quarterback position is still wide open.

Both quarterbacks seemed fairly sharp when I surveyed them at practice last week. However, most analysts are saying that Gus Frerotte has a better grasp of the offense and is making less mental mistakes. I'm not surprised because first of all Frerotte is used to playing in this system, and second of all Feeley is known for taking chances and making boneheaded decisions from time to time.

Before training camp opened the consensus was that A.J. Feeley had the stronger arm and more "upside" (whatever that means), but now I am hearing that the difference in arm strength between the two signal callers is minimal. If this is truly the case, then I believe that we should go into the season with Frerotte at the helm.

I'm a big fan of Feeley and I think that he has the potential to be a legitimate NFL quarterback. However, if he is still making poor decisions and we have a guy, in Frerotte, who can run this offense with a high level of efficiency then we need to go that route. There's no sense in the Miami Dolphins losing winnable games for the sake of grooming "potential".
