Why nobody understands Ricky Williams

I'm going to tell you why almost nobody, especially the media, understands Ricky Williams. I'm hearing a lot of trash being talked about the enigmatic Miami Dolphins running back. From print media, to online media, to television, the pundits are all questioning his desire to play the game.

The funniest part about it is that these folks are trying to compare Ricky Williams to other more generic football players. They are interpreting his sound bites based on what they are used to hearing from his contemporaries. However, if you know anything about Ricky Williams you know that he is not like most other humans let alone other football players.

Ricky is not going to give you those standard "I love football" sound bites that you get from Peyton Manning. He is not going to sound off in a completely positive manner the way fellow running backs Ahman Green or Curtis Martin will. Don't fault him for being honest when he tells you that he's not what he used to be a few seasons ago or when he expresses doubt about his NFL future. That's just the way Ricky Williams is. It doesn't mean that he's not going to tote the football and give it everything he's got on the playing field.

As ironic as it sounds, I will go out on a limb and say that his perceived "lack of motivation" is actually a good signal for Miami Dolphins fans. It means that he is comfortable being himself. After all, don't forget that just weeks before running away from this team last year, he was professing to the media and his teammates that he wanted to be a team leader and was looking forward to the season. In hindsight, we all now that those sentiments were a bunch of bull. So I dare say that its better to have a questioning and realistic (yet honest) Ricky Williams, than a shiny happy people (yet insincere) Ricky Williams.
