Northside High (Columbus, Ga.) defensive tackle John Drew gave his solid verbal to the Duke Blue Devils on Friday for the ’09 class. A four-star Rivals recruit, the 6-foot-1, 303-pounder is the Web site’s 19th-ranked defensive tackle in the class and No. 5 run-stuffer.

Drew chose Durham, N.C., over offers from Georgia Tech, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. Ron Middleton is credited as the primary.

COMMENTARY: Drew is the first four-star player to commit to Duke since running back Brandon King (class of ’06). Although Duke is only at three overall commitments, the quality appears to be solid.
