Michael Vick was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles to a 2 year deal yesterday. On the surface this move is surprising. The Eagles were one of 26 teams declaring that they had no interest in Vick. After the headaches they endured from Terrell Owens and their love/hate relationship with Donovan McNabb over the last couple of seasons it would seem that coach Andy Reid and the front office would shy away from this PR nightmare. But upon closer examination Vick to the Eagles makes more sense than just about any other possible suitor for his services.

Coach Reid has always seemed to be completely unfazed by the media circuses that have surrounded the team in recent years whether from T.O., McNabb or his own personal family issues. In short, he just doesn’t seem to care what people say about him or his team. He is probably better equipped to handle the negative press than most other coaches in the league. And Eagles fans will almost certainly embrace Vick just as soon as he rattles off one of his patented tackle breaking runs for a touchdown.

Vick’s familiarity with the West Coast style of offense should make him a quick study in Philadelphia. Both Coach Reid and his offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg are masters of the modified West Coast offense. Also, former Green Bay back-up QB Doug Pederson will be on the Eagles coaching staff this year and can help Vick adjust. Once he settles into his new surroundings Vick will be an upgrade over current Eagles back-up Kevin Kolb. He will also add a new dimension to their offense should they decide to use him in some kind of wildcat formation in the backfield or lined up as a receiver.

The one question mark about this move is how it will be received by Donovan McNabb. His relationship with the Eagles has been rocky over the last couple of seasons culminating in his benching last season for poor play. McNabb rallied the team into the playoffs at the end of last season and everyone in Philly seemed to have made up. But this move may be another thorn in the side of a player who has shown signs of being unhappy at times with his current team.

All in all I would say that this move has more potential upside than pitfalls for the Eagles organization and should give Vick a chance to showcase his talents for a potential starting job in 2010.
