PHILADELPHIA, PA - After flirting briefly with the Kansas City Chiefs, Jeremiah Trotter signed a 5 year contract with the Eagles. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the Pro Bowl linebacker reportedly received $15 million. "We retained a good player who really wanted to be here and we really wanted to have here," Eagles president Joe Banner said. "We worked together with him and his agent to find a way to make that happen."

Trotter left the Eagles in a bitter contract dispute after the 2001 season. He signed a 7 year, $35 million contract with the Washington Redskins. However, the veteran was plagued by injuries and waived last June after 2 disappointing seasons. Humbled by the release, Trotter swallowed his pride and signed a 1 year deal worth $535,000 with the Eagles.

Trotter played primarily on special teams in Philadelphia's first 8 games of the season. But after the Eagles surrendered 252 rushing yards in a 27-3 loss to Pittsburgh on November 7, Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson put Trotter back at MLB and moved Mark Simoneau to weakside LB.

Trotter's intensity provided an immediate boost for the Eagles as they allowed an average of 10.7 points and just over 70 yards per game on the ground over the next 6 games. His impact with the Eagles didn't go unnoticed as he garnered Pro Bowl honors despite taking over as the starter midway through the season. He registered 55 tackles over the last 8 games. "We're happy to have Jeremiah back in the middle of our defense," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "He brings a lot of emotion to this team. He's a tremendous leader."

In the playoffs, Trotter had 7 tackles and 1 interception in the divisional round win over the Minnesota Vikings and collected 8 solo tackles in helping shut down Atlanta's Michael Vick in the NFC championship game.
