Atlanta Falcons defensive end Brady Smith underwent neck surgery this past weekend. Smith had a cervical-region, nerve-root decompression procedure to relieve pain that has affected him during the offseason.

Doctors project the operation will sideline the player anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks. As it is, Smith will end up missing the entire training camp and some of the exhibition games. Should the recovery take 12 weeks, he would be out of action for the first 5 contests this year.

Training camp begins Monday in Flowery Branch, Georgia. The Falcons start their regular season schedule with a Monday night game against the Philadelphia Eagles from the Georgia Dome on September 12.

The 6 foot 5 inch, 274 pound Smith finished 2004 with 6 sacks, 30 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recoveries. The Colorado State product is entering his tenth season in the NFL, having played his four seasons with the New Orleans Saints before playing his last 5 campaigns with the Falcons.
