It's the stretch run in fantasy football and some participants have mailed it in because they know there's no hope of making the playoffs. Others, meanwhile, are right in the thick of a race for the postseason in their respective leagues.

The key to positioning yourself for the playoffs often lies in scouring the free agent wire for timely additions. What too many fantasy owners forget to realize is that even if your team is stacked and you don't need any replacements, picking up the next big thing can prevent your opponents from getting a leg up in your league.

Here are some of the best bets for free agents who can make a solid contribution to your fantasy team:

Quarterback
Shaun Hill, San Francisco 49ers: Hill got the starting job by default, but that doesn't matter now. He has played better in each game and has completed almost 60 percent of his passes with five touchdowns. Hill is only owned in 19 percent of Yahoo! public fantasy leagues. He can be a solid backup in case your starter goes down with an injury.

Running back
Pierre Thomas, New Orleans Saints: With Reggie Bush still out, Thomas has emerged as a solid all-purpose back for the Saints. He gained 144 total yards last week against Kansas City and has become a good option for a flex position. Thomas is only owned in 39 percent of Yahoo! public fantasy leagues.

Wide receiver
Justin Gage, Tennessee Titans: Gage has become a serious deep threat for quarterback Kerry Collins in Tennessee, and he is finally healthy for the first time all season. Gage has caught eight passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns in the past two games, against Chicago and Jacksonville, and is only owned in 35 percent of Yahoo! public fantasy leagues. Get Gage while you can; his stock is rising fast.
