Washington Redskins starting running back Clinton Portis is coming off a 1,500-plus-yard season and had likely found his way into many a pre-draft top five list. But his fantasy football draft status my have taken a nosedive thanks to a partially dislocated shoulder suffered in Sunday night's preseason contest against the Cincinnati Bengals. Incidentally, Portis was injured making a big hit after an interception.

What you have to ask yourself is the following: does this mean that you should drop Portis down on your RB priority list, or does this mean that the former Miami Hurricanes ball carrier is primed to become a draft steal? Unfortunately, the answer my not be all that easy to discern.

For starters, team officials have not yet released any information on exactly how long they expect the Pro Bowl running back to be out; however, based on prior case histories, Portis could be sidelined for anywhere between a few days to the entire season.

For the sake of example, let's take a quick look at two contrasting case studies. Back in 2000, basketball icon Allen Iverson was able to shake off a partially dislocated shoulder in just one game, returning to score 29 points in the next contest in which he participated. Meanwhile, back in 2002, Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis was so hampered by his partially dislocated shoulder that he was forced to opt for season-ending surgery.

Portis' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has stated that his client is expected to be back by Week One of the regular season and that he doesn't think this is a serious injury. But then again, it's Rosenhaus' job to say things like that.

Your best bet would be to wait and see if/when the Redskins' medical staff releases some more detailed information on Portis' projected recovery time. If Portis is back on the field by the time your draft is set to commence, don't slide him down your draft chart. If he's still out by that time, play it by ear.
