Do you remember when your parents used to tell you not to make the same mistakes they did? Well, today I'm acting as your fantasy football parent, telling you not to make the mistake of over-thinking things.

Last week, I thought it was a stroke of pure genius to pick up a Bengals 'DST' fresh off a six-turnover performance and set to face what appeared to be one of the league's most inept offenses. Fifty-one painful points later by the Cleveland Browns, I remembered why it's important to go with proven commodities and not overreach when sifting through the free-agent pile.

With that in mind, this week's column is going to focus on potential free-agent pickups with a more proven pedigree who could make the difference between winning and losing in Week 3.

Let's start off with the quarterback position. The Houston Texans' Matt Schaub is an interesting option because he's had a hot hand in the first two weeks of the season and could get himself into a shootout against the Indianapolis Colts. However, the Colts have been playing fairly solid pass defense, and Schaub is still a relatively inexperienced starter, so handle this situation with care.

Also, keep an eye on the QB situation for the New York Jets. If Chad Pennington gets the starting nod, don't hesitate to make him your go this week. Even if he's a little banged up, he should still be able to carve up an injury-plagued Dolphin defense that he has traditionally played well against. If Kellen Clemens gets the start, be wary. It would be only his second NFL start, which might bode well for a Miami defense that is itching for its first really good showing of the year.

A lot of people are in a hurry to pick up Green Bay running back DeShawn Wynn after he racked up 58 yards and two touchdowns off the bench in Week 2. But keep in mind that Wynn put those numbers up against the Giants' hapless defense and will now go up against a more formidable Chargers stop unit. The former Florida Gators standout may still be worth a shot if you believe that he will get the bulk of Green Bay's goal-line carries, but just keep in mind that "starter" Vernand Morency should return to the lineup, further diluting Wynn's workload.

A safer option might be veteran Sammy Morris. Thus far, Morris has outperformed Patriots backfield mate Laurence Maroney, and he will now go up against one of his former employers. The Bills are coming off a pitiful defensive performance in which they gave nearly 200 rushing yards to the Steelers, so Morris could be a real diamond in the rough.

If you haven't already picked up wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery, a Jet, do so immediately. Cotchery seems to be coming into his own in Year 4 of his career, and may finally find the end zone in Week 3 against the aforementioned Dolphins.

Veteran wideout Joe Jurevicius might also be worth a look. Though Cleveland is still a bit of an unproven commodity, Jurevicius is a battle-tested wideout. In addition, Oakland's pass defense has been surprisingly porous.

I'm determined to atone for my foolish actions from a week ago, so I will close this column out by picking a new, and hopefully more productive, fantasy 'DST.'

I'm going to pick the Panthers in this spot. Not so much because of the talent that they possess, but because their opponents, the Atlanta Falcons, are so inept. That line of thinking burned me last week, but this time around, I've got (Carolina's) pedigree on my side.

Here goes nothing ...
