San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith was able to do some light throwing this week, the first test of his shoulder since last month. Coach Mike Nolan said in the Oakland Tribune that he's relying on his medical staff and was reluctant to talk about a timeline for Smith's return.

"They said to give him light throwing. He did light throwing. Our planning as coaching staff is based on the medical staff, and we can't go any further than that," said Nolan.

Commentary: At this rate, Smith might not see game action again this year. That leaves the 49ers with the unenviable task of trying to decide if Smith is the franchise quarterback without seeing him in more games.

Fantasy Football Impact: Trent Dilfer will start again for San Francisco. He has two touchdown passes in each of the past two games, but Dilfer now has to face a tough Minnesota defense.
