Crennel gets vote of confidence in new deal from Browns

The Cleveland Browns have come to an agreement with coach Romeo Crennel on a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through 2011 and reportedly pay him $4 million per year.

Commentary: Crennel pulled quite a turnaround, going from hot seat to hot coach in 2007. He was just 10-22 in his first two seasons, and it didn't look like the Browns would do much better this season. But he led them to a 10-6 record and earned the extension even though the Browns did not make the playoffs. "He really deserves an extension," rookie tackle Joe Thomas told reporters. "He did a great job this year, and you can see that his plan is kind of taking hold, what his vision was when he first got hired. It will be nice for him to finally not feel the heat from everybody." The problem is that Crennel hasn't proved it yet or really done anything. And if his team regresses in 2008, the Browns will look foolish for extending him. They should have made him prove it in 2008.
