When Georgia Tech hired Paul Johnson as its head coach, many wondered if his option running attack could be successful in the ACC. With the entire league rebuilding, this was the perfect season for Johnson to unleash his offense on the conference.

Commentary: For any school to switch offensive philosophies, it will create some growing pains. Look at Michigan. Despite a complete overhaul of the offense, Georgia Tech has been able to suffer those growing pains while getting wins. Now the Yellow Jackets appear poised to make a run at the ACC title.Such is life this year in the ACC, where anyone with a pulse has a chance.

Last week, Georgia Tech went on the road and beat Boston College despite three first-half fumbles. Turnovers like that should derail any chance to win on the road. However, Boston College is trying to break in a new quarterback who’s not quite ready to fill Matt Ryan’s shoes. Chris Crane threw two interceptions and BC lost a fumble to even the turnover margin.

Georgia Tech’s transition has been eased by a tenacious defense, but you can’t hide the fact that the opposition is down. This week, the Jackets go to Virginia Tech, which is usually considered a loss before you step on the field. But the Hokies were held to three points in the first half by Furman last week. The schedule will toughen down the stretch with trips to Clemson and North Carolina and visits from Florida State and Miami. It’s a long season, but Johnson has Georgia Tech off to a dream start. By working through the kinks and pulling off wins, Tech is poised to challenge for an ACC title that many thought would never happen for an option team in a BCS conference.

Fan Pulse: Virginia Tech fans are not looking forward to this matchup. Georgia Tech should be able to exploit a young team in turmoil.

Injury Watch: There are no significant injuries this week for the Yellow Jackets.
