Contract talks have gone south between the Super Bowl champions and wide receiver Plaxico Burress.

Now, it seems the Giants are getting back through Plax what they traded away when they dealt tight end Jeremy Shockey. But not in a good way.

Ralph Vacciano of the New York Daily News reports that Burress has given up on hope of receiving the contract extension he wanted this offseason, and won't play until his ankle feels 100 percent healthy.

Giants general manager Jerry Reese has also said he and Burress' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, are working to complete a deal by the end of training camp.

Giants fans posting on the team forum Big Blue Interactive are not only used to this song and dance, they're quickly calling attention to the possibility of other motivation for Burress' decision not to practice.

"Plax really has no leverage unless he pulls a Shockey, and holds out. But he's probably restrained from doing that since he wants to live up to being a playoff hero for the team, and sell more books. Faking an injury to sit out wouldn't make sense either, since I'm sure the main hesitation the Giants have in offering him a better contract is that Plax is a bit injury prone."

These situations tend to get redundant, as one poster points out.

"Plax ain't gonna do jack squat until he gets his money. And the Giants aren't gonna do jack squat until Plax plays. This is an ugly chicken and egg scenario."

Burress caught 70 passes last season for 1,025 yards and 12 touchdowns despite an ankle injury that kept him less than 100 percent all season. A poster mentioned that no one is ever 100 percent after a certain point in the season, but another one doesn't want to look past Burress' contributions to the team's Super Bowl run last season.

"good move - slam the serious, sensitive guy, who gutted up last year on one foot and was the season MVP, into the ground and smack him around to teach him a lesson. Very good idea. Yeah - the Giants hold all the cards with the best receiver the Giants have ever put on the field. I get it."
