Jets must remain grounded in both offense and expectations

It's very easy to get excited when quarterback Brett Favre is leading your team, but Week 7's loss in Oakland was a stone-cold smack to the face of New York Jets fans. Now it's time to come to terms with some realities. First, the Jets are not Super Bowl threats at the moment. Second, the 39-year-old Favre is finally starting to show his age. Finally, if the Jets have any hope of making a playoff run it must come from a suddenly improved running game.

Thomas Jones, who's certainly not a star back, looked like one during his 159-yard performance in his team's 16-13 loss to the Raiders. His success is in large part a product of a rejuvenated offensive line that is getting better as the season rolls on. The O-line will likely continue to gel versus a Kansas City Chiefs defense that gave up 332 yards to the Tennessee Titans last week. It will also offer a much-needed chance to once again get above .500 for the Jets. Then again, there are clearly no guarantees for the Jets after dropping a game in Oakland.

It's also clear that it is now time to lower expectations to a wild-card bid in the AFC. The Jets will probably not catch the AFC East-leading Buffalo Bills (5-1), who defeated San Diego on Sunday. Punching a playoff ticket would be more than this team should ask for at this point.

Fantasy Football Commentary: It's obvious that Favre is too erratic to count on as a fantasy starter. Back-to-back subpar performances against the less-than-vaunted defenses of the Bengals and Raiders attests to that.

Injury Watch: Cornerback Justin Miller's foot injury kept him inactive in Week 7. He is questionable for Sunday's matchup with Kansas City.
