Sum up of Defensive Plays (1st half)
#1: The defense started off strong despite the bad field position. They sacked QB Mark Bulger and held the Rams to a 48 Yard field goal. (Remember: They started at about the 30 yard line in Jets territory)
#2: Steven Jackson started the drive by exploding for over 10 yards and a first down. Calvin Pace sacks Mark Bulger. This is the second time in the first quarter that Bulger was sacked today. It will be a third down and 18 after the false start. The drive ends in a play where the Rams don’t score. They have to punt and the punt sails in the end zone
#3 The Rams will start with the ball at the 25 yard line. Rams QB Mark Bulger throws for over 25 yards. The Jets can’t seem to stop Bulger in this drive as he makes another for a first down. This third down will be big in the red zone as Bulger is sacked for the third time today. This defense is missing some of its main players and they still hold the Rams to just another field goal. The score is 10-6.
#4 Despite a short punt the ball took a lucky bounce and it was a loss of 3 yards for the Rams. They will start at the 15 yard line. Antonio Pittman will start the drive with a gain of over 7 yards. Kyle Boller, the backup QB for has made some good throws thus far. If Bulger gets injured, he might be more then able to fill Bulger’s shoes. Can the Jets Defense keep the Rams from scoring after the two minute warning? This will be a key test on 4th down as the Rams go for it. The Rams converged on 4th down and are in position to score. After a few plays it will be a 39 yard field goal. With four seconds left in the 2nd Quarter, it is 10-9 Jets.

HALFTIME RECAP

The first half of the first preseason game for the Jets has been an interesting one. Mark Sanchez made his Preseason Debut and looked great. His first throw was for 48 yards and he threw for 88 yards total. Despite only playing for one series, the drive he led resulted in a touchdown. (Thomas Jones ran for the TD) Don’t forget about Kellen Clemens, who was 4-4 for 28 yards. In limited play, Eric Ange had a couple of completions as the third string QB. The defense looked good, just allowing three field goals and sacked starting QB Mark Bulger three times. The Jets are up 10-9 at halftime.

Play 2: Ange throws an incomplete Hail Mary pass.
Sum up of Defensive Plays (Second Half)
1. The Jets looked awful on the first play of the second half. Sam Gado rushed for 77 yards on one play as the Rams take a 16-10 lead.
2. Kyle Boller overthrows a couple of times to lead to a punt. The punt was lost, but the ball was retained by the Jets.
3. The Rams rushed for the first two plays and have gotten a couple of first downs. Brock Berlin has played decent at QB for the Rams. He is competing for the position of third QB on the Rams roster. The Jets have forced a Punt and despite a long drive there is still time for the offense to score points for the Jets.
4. As the game nears closer to the end, the Jets defense must stay tight. Cummings sacks Belin for the fourth down. This is the 4th sack for the Jets defense today.
5. Berlin (QB) is hurt by a Jets linebacker and the defense appears to be physical. The Jets are able to stop the Rams offense, but a booted punt gives the ball back to the Rams. The Rams have the ball on the 25 yard line in Jets territory. The Jets allow a Touchdown and the Rams have retaken the lead 23-20.
6. The Jets are down 23-20 with two minutes left in the game. It seems unlikely the Jets will have enough time to come back. The Rams continue to run the football. This third down will decide the game. The Rams will punt and the Jets will have about 20 seconds to try and score.

GAME OVER
FINAL SCORE: Rams 23 Jets 20

GAME RECAP
The Jets and Rams played a very good preseason game today. There were the highs and lows for both teams, but the Rams came out on top 23-20. The most exciting moment for Jets fans was probably seeing Mark Sanchez make his preseason debut. Going 3-4 for 88 yards and leading the Jets to a touchdown drive was sure to be a great thrill for the young QB. The low of the night was seeing the Jets drop a Punt and turnover the Football on special teams. This gave the Rams their second life and they used it to their advantage. The Rams scored the game winning Touchdown on the drive.
Kellen Clemens had a good game. Despite only playing two series, he was 4-4 and threw for 28 yards. The QB competition should be a good one and we’ll see what happens.
The Jets defense was suspect at best after the 1st team players left the field. The defense had three sacks on the 1st team and only one sack after the first team left the field. When everything was said and done, the Jets lost 23-20.

Stats and Grades:
Kellen Clemens: 4-4 28 yards (A-):
He was pretty good, but he had a costly turnover in the first quarter that the Jets could’ve used to their advantage.

Mark Sanchez 3-4 88 yards (A+)
Sanchez throws a 48 yard pass for the first pass of his career. He led the Jets to a TD drive and only played one series in the game. Mark showed a great arm and astounding accuracy for his age.

David Clowney: 3 catches 102 yards 1 TDS (A+)
He caught what many fans thought was the game winning touchdown pass. Jets fans should watch this guy. He could be the future if he produces like he did today.
Jets running game (C+)
The Jets running game was decent. Shone Greene rushed for over 40 yards and Thomas Jones had a rushing TD. The running game wasn’t a big factor because of the lack of yards.
Jets Special Teams: (D-)
The only reason they get a D- is because they showed up. They dropped two punts including the punt that led to the game winning drive by the Rams. They need to work harder on catching punts. Even Leon Washington, (who is going through contract negotiations), dropped a kickoff on the first play of the game.

The next game is on ESPN on Monday August 24th. The Jets will face the Ravens. (Head coach Rex Ryan’s former team)

PREVIEW for Jets at Ravens
This will be the game that may decide who starts for the Jets in the regular season. Head Coach Rex Ryan says he wants to decide who will be the starting QB by week three of the preseason when the Jets face the Giants. Whoever plays more may get the starting nod for the season opener against the Houston Texans. Also look for the starters to play a little longer. (At least the first Quarter)
The Jets defense will need to be stronger and not allow silly mistakes. Look for the defense to be blitzing the Quarterbacks of the Ravens a bit more then the Rams. Look for this because the Jets will want to prove to Rex Ryan that they can play his style of defense. The special teams cannot be dropping kick offs or Punts. If this was the regular season, you can bet Jets fans would be extremely angry.

Finally look to see how Rex Ryan reacts to facing his old team in his second career game as head coach of the Jets. We’ll see what happens at the next game.
