HEMPSTEAD, NY - The New York Jets didn't need long to replace their backup running back, agreeing to a contract with Derrick Blaylock.

Blaylock got a 5 year deal with the Jets and will serve as Curtis Martin's backup. Martin led the NFL in rushing last year at age 31, while Blaylock is 25. More of an outside threat than LaMont Jordan - Martin's backup for the last 4 years - Blaylock also is smaller, measuring 5' 9", 210 lbs.

Blaylock is used to being a substitute. He spent most of his 4 seasons with the Chiefs as Priest Holmes' backup and performed well when Holmes was hurt last season. In 5 starts, Blayock had 539 yards rushing and scored 8 touchdowns. 4 TDs came in one game, a 56-10 win against Atlanta.

Lance Legree, 27, spent his first 4 seasons with the New York Giants. He rotated at defensive tackle and end.

The Jets also signed TE Jeb Putzier, a restricted free agent, to a 5 year offer sheet worth $12.5 million - which includes a signing bonus of $2.5 million. The Denver Broncos have 7 days to match the offer. If the Broncos elect not to match, they will receive just a 6th-round pick as compensation.

Putzier caught 36 passes for 572 yards and 2 TDs last season - his 3rd with the Broncos. His yards-per-catch average of 15.9 was the best in the NFL for a tight end. Anthony Becht and Chris Baker combined for 31 catches for 282 yards at tight end for the Jets last season. Becht is an unrestricted free agent.

The Jets also named Sam Gash as assistant running backs and special teams coach. He played in 177 games as a fullback in a 12-year career.
