New York Jets fans may finally be able to breathe a sigh of relief. It seems as though, for the first time in a long time, franchise quarterback Chad Pennington is healthy again. A renewed Pennington will vastly improve a team that was injury riddled and subpar last season.

The alleged training camp battle for the starting quarterback job pits Pennington, Patrick Ramsey and rookie Kellen Clemens against each other. Of course, there is some doubt as to whether or not a competition actually exists. Assuming the frequently fragile Pennington is healthy, it surely is his job.

After this weekend, the starting quarterback position might have become more clear cut than ever. On Saturday, Pennington continued his stellar play this summer, completing 12-of-14 passes for 117 yards against the Jets' starting defensive unit.

The 30-year-old's performance can be looked at in two different ways. The first being, he played terrific, and that means good news for the offense. Or, consequently, the defense is in store for another bad season.

It's very possible that the truth lies somewhere in between. When healthy, the Marshall product has been productive, and a winner. So, if he truly is healthy again, and it appears he is, then the poor defensive showing could be attributed to Pennington being on top of his game.

At this point, the New York Jets' fans will gladly take a healthy No. 10 behind center. A successful 2006 rests mostly on the shoulders of the six-year veteran. If the early indications ring true, there's a chance the team won't be as bad as many pundits suggest.
