Personal foul, unnecessary roughness, No. 88, 15 yards, automatic first down!

This foolish penalty taken by tight end Doug Jolley all but sealed his fate with the New York Jets' young, hard-nosed, no nonsense head coach Eric Mangini.

Just a year earlier, former - and I emphasize former for good reason - general manager Terry Bradway gave up a first-round pick as part of a deal for the former Oakland Raiders' second-round pick, Jolley.

What was Bradway thinking?

Well, he wasn't thinking. And that's why he no longer is making decisions in New York. Thankfully for Jets fans, he stepped down from the GM duties this offseason, paving the way for Mike Tannenbaum.

Sure, in three seasons with the Silver and Black, the 6-foot-4, 250-pounder showed flashes of being a legitimate weapon in the passing game. However, he's never shown an aptitude to block, and he had never caught more than 32 passes or two touchdowns in any season.

The Doug Jolley experiment in New York ended after just one season Thursday, when the Jets traded the underperforming tight end to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a conditional draft pick.

One season, 29 receptions for 324 yards, one touchdown, and a first-round pick gone. That's what the transaction amounted to for the Jets.

Unloading Jolley for the draft pick seems to be a good move for a team that is obviously in a rebuilding stage, so stockpiling picks in exchange for disappointing players is always a good idea.

The offense shouldn't take a hit because tight end Chris Baker stepped up last year and is expected to be able to fill the shoes of Jolley. Also, the offense certainly won't be a juggernaut and will likely find itself in the bottom third of the league this season.

News and notes:

In other roster moves on Thursday, the Jets obtained the services of TE Sean Ryan from the Cowboys for a conditional draft pick; they also claimed wide receiver Sloan Thomas off waivers from Tennessee.
