New York Jets defensive tackle Josh Evans announced his retirement Wednesday. Evans said, "Physically I wasn't able to do a lot of things I used to be able to do."

The 6'3", 280 lbs. Evans suffered a back injury during training camp last year. He saw action in only 1 game during 2004.

The UAB product was in the NFL 10 years. He signed with the Jets in 2002. In 94 regular season games during his career, Evans recorded 225 tackles, 21.5 sacks, 6 deflected passes, 2 forced fumbles, and 5 fumble recoveries.

Evans backed up starters Dewayne Robertson and Jason Ferguson at DT for the Jets. New York recently lost Ferguson; he signed a free agent contract with Dallas in March. Not coincidentally, the Jets selected Utah defensive tackle Sione Pouha in the third round of Saturday's NFL draft.
