A majority of New York voters oppose the idea of a new stadium for the New York Jets on the west side of Manhattan. However, many think there is a chance it is going to be built according to a statewide poll.

The Quinnipiac University Polling Institute found 51 percent of voters across the state oppose the stadium plan being pushed by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg while 40 percent support the plan. Quinnipiac's telephone poll of 1,191 registered voters was conducted April 28-May 2 and has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Support is strongest in the suburban counties surrounding the city (47 percent) and weakest in upstate New York (34 percent). Within the city, 41 percent of voters support the stadium plan.

Asked whether they believe the stadium will be built, 32 percent said it was very likely to be built and 42 percent it was somewhat likely. Only 5 percent of voters said it was not-at-all likely the new Jets stadium would be built.

While the stadium itself would be financed by the Jets, the state and city would each contribute $300 million for related projects. NYC Mayor Bloomberg is also trying to host the 2012 Olympics and feels the stadium would be a centerpiece to help secure the bid.
