The New York Jets have decided to go with youth at the safety position after releasing 9-year veteran Reggie Tongue. Though he started all 16 games last season, the Jets will use fourth-year man Jon McGraw at strong safety and second-year player Erik Coleman at free safety in 2005. Bear in mind that the Jets took safeties Kerry Rhodes of Louisville and Andre Maddox of North Carolina State in the 2005 draft.

The 6 foot, 204 pound Tongue finished 2004 with 71 tackles, 1 interception, 4 pass deflections, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery.

The Oregon State product began his career in 1996 with the Kansas City Chiefs. After 4 seasons with the Chiefs, he went on to play 4 productive years with the Seattle Seahawks before signing with the Jets in March 2004. Tongue has 678 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 15 INTs, 40 pass breakups, 13 forced fumbles, and 9 recoveries of an opponent's fumble in 141 games during his NFL career.
