Virginia defensive end Jeffrey Fitzgerald will be transferring to Kansas State. As a sophomore starter last season for the Cavaliers, Fitzgerald recorded 73 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, four pass breakups, four quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, and two interceptions (one for a touchdown).

“I also coached Duane Brown, and Jeffrey is every bit the athlete Duane is,” Fitzgerald’s high school head coach, Patrick Kane, said.

The 6-foot-3, 279-pounder must sit out 2008 and will play as a fifth-year senior in 2009.

Kane said Fitzgerald left for unspecified personal reasons.

COMMENTARY: Fitzgerald played very well for the Cavs last season, but he was too much in the shadow of Chris Long, the second overall pick in this past April’s NFL draft. Fitzgerald should fit in well at K-State.
