Roy Williams is bringing real excitement to Detroit Lions followers, improving game by game, honing the necessary skills expected of a first-round draft pick cum NFL superstar. And his play has been pretty good, too.

Oh, you thought this was going to be a reminder of the killer year the Lions' WR was quietly putting together in the Detroit corner. (You thought the New England Patriots were playing off the radar? The Lions are playing beyond the range of the Hubble Observatory.)

What the heck, let's look at the mind-bogglers again. Williams in on pace for 1,400 yards and has bagged 138 yards or more four times this year. He has a TD reception in each of the last three games. His four TDs are second on the team only to Kevin Jones, third in receiving yards while only 10th in receptions. This guy is even one of the few NFL stars better than his "Madden" version. Who knew?

The mundane area of football is hardly the sphere in which Williams has truly dominated the NFL this year, however. No, for smilin' Roy (smiling everywhere, that is, except for in his new ESPN player card picture) truly excels in his media savvy.

Earlier in the year, Williams managed to bend a few ears his way with outrageous predictions of a win; the Lions' subsequent mauling at the hands of the Chicago Bears did nothing to stop Williams' one-man assault on reality. The Felines would win the following week against the Green Bay Packers because, you see, Detroit probably could have put up 40 against the Seattle Seahawks. Instead, the Lions sloppily lost. Williams may have stopped grinning, but not for long.

So, after a couple of wins in which Williams turned in a pair of equally sweet performances, only a true pro could top the sort of beginner's luck Williams had in his first three weeks.

On Monday, though, Williams looked like a pro.

"We've got the best quarterback in the league," said Williams of his new bosom buddy, John Kitna, as quoted by a baffled Michael Rosenberg of the Detroit Free-Press. "He [doesn't] get the recognition because we're 2-6. But he's the best quarterback in the league."

Witness the excellence of the quote. Not only is this sufficiently rah-rah positive enough so as to portray Williams as a good team player, it's also sufficiently wacko to mark a comeback from the boredom he produced in the media after guaranteeing wins that never materialized.

Hey, this guy may someday be, in terms of media manipulation and maybe even football, on a level with T.O., only more likeable. Most quotable from Williams in the post-game glow, though, was this one, which really belies the young player's inexperience in the biz: "We're the best 2-6 team in the league."

Wait, before you chortle and snigger about Williams' tenuous grasp on reality, check out how common this sentiment is in football parlance. Performing a Google search on "best 2-6 team" turned up blog posts, news stories and write-ups from all levels of all games. Plus, here at RealFootball365, they're the best 2-6 team as well. Hey, by our official reckoning, the Lions are almost the best team under .500

The man's a genius.

And his football is pretty good, too.
