UL cornerback Council charged with armed robbery

The University of Louisville football program rolled the dice with cornerback Rod Council. Now, it looks as if the Cardinals may have come up snake eyes.

Council was arrested Wednesday and charged with robbing a convenience store in Jonathan Valley, N.C., that morning. This was no snatch-and-grab shoplifting rap -- the robber apparently used what was described in a police report as a "9-millimeter Uzi" and demanded the clerk's cell phone as well as the money in the cash drawer.

Police put out a "Be On the Lookout" for a silver Chevrolet Impala, which was discovered parked at a rest area near Mile Marker 447 off I-40 in Tennessee. Council was arrested at the scene without incident.

According to a statement released by University of Louisville sports information director Rocco Gasparro: "We were informed today that senior cornerback Rod Council was arrested early this morning. Based upon the information we received, Rod Council has been permanently dismissed from our team immediately. We do not tolerate that type of behavior in our football program. FGoprtunately, no innocent bystanders were injured or harmed in the process."

Except for UL coach Steve Kragthorpe, who now has a major hole to plug in an already leaky secondary.

Commentary: Virginia Tech originally recruited Council, a prep All-American at West Charlotte (N.C.) High School, but backed off after Council and a classmate were charged with two felonies in the theft of $16,000 worth of computer equipment from the school.

The charges were eventually downgraded, and Council was able to enroll at Louisville. Last season, the 5-foot-11, 190-pounder started 10 of 12 games at cornerback, notching 32 tackles and leading the team with two interceptions.
