Shooting behind him, UL’s Guy eager to return

Fortunately for Trent Guy and the University of Louisville football team, someone who has yet to be identified was an imperfect shooter.

"An inch to the right it would have hit my spine," Guy told ESPN a few weeks after being shot in the back outside a Louisville nightclub, "and inch to the left, it would have hit a vital organ."

The shooting spun off an altercation between Guy and a man who "touched" his girlfriend inside the club, and no arrests have been made.

"I don't feel any kind of way toward the guys about it," he said. "I just pray to God about the situation and pray for those guys."

Meanwhile, the 5-foot-9, 165-pound junior -- something of a vital organ himself for the Louisville offense -- awaits the go-ahead form doctors to begin contact drills again.

"Every time I go back, I'm like, 'Am I released yet?'" Guy said.

He's reportedly lost another 10 pounds during his convalescence (the shooting happened on July 5), but probably very little of his speed. As a sophomore, the Charlotte, N.C., product caught 11 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns, and was projected as a starter at wide receiver after Harry Douglas and Mario Urrutia left for the NFL. He and JaJuan Spillman were also considered the top return men (Guy has hauled back a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns at Louisville), but Spillman was kicked off the team after his second marijuana possession conviction.

Nevertheless, UL coach Steve Kragthorpe said he's not going to rush Guy's comeback.

"I've got the reins on him," said Kragthorpe of his wide receiver's itch to return to action. "You've got to pull him back."

For his part, Guy said he's learned that "when we go out, people know us. We just have to watch what we do,"
