As any coach or player would tell you, not a whole lot of stock is placed in preseason rankings. But let’s look at the LSU Tigers going in to the 2009 season.

The Tigers were ranked ninth in the Coaches Preseason poll which was released earlier today. This marked the sixth straight year that LSU has been ranked in the top ten in this preseason poll along with being one of four SEC teams being listed in the top ten. The other three are Florida (1), Alabama (5) and Ole Miss (10) round out the quartet.

Of course in today’s world of college sports, it is not how you are ranked in the preseason, but how you finish at the end of the season. After all, during this span, LSU has managed to finish in the top ten four times which includes a pair of both BCS National and SEC championships.

The Bayou Bengals are coming off of a very off year which they had some rather high expectations going into it considering that they were the then defending BCS National and SEC Champions in 2008. Their biggest issues going into that season was the lack of experience at the quarterback position and the loss of their defensive coordinator Bo Pellini who left the program to become the head coach at Nebraska.

This year, LSU enters this season as a very loaded team who has the potential to put a lot of fear into their opponents. After all, they have pretty much answered a couple of their biggest needs at quarterback and on defense by naming one person (John Chavis) as the defensive coordinator instead of using co-defensive coordinators.

The Tigers also have the number one ranked recruiting class in the country in which a number of individuals who could very easily see some playing time at key positions in the fall. These guys could very possibly fill in where there were a combined total of nine starters (five offense, four defense) were lost from last year.

Head coach Les Miles asked his team this question going into their off-season conditioning in preparation for this upcoming season, “How do you want to be remembered?” Let’s see if the 2009 LSU Tigers are truly up to the challenge of answering that question.

Only time will tell…..
