Les Miles just wants to enjoy this season

It's inevitable now -- LSU coach Les Miles will be fielding questions about the Michigan job for the rest of the season.

In any other scenario, that would seem odd. After all, Miles' Tigers looked downright carnivorous against Virginia Tech last Saturday night and are already being paired off with Southern Cal in the final showdown by most pundits. Michigan, on the other hand, turned into a Big Ten punchline by losing to Division I-AA (now FCS) Appalachian State in its opener and a punching bag in a game two beating from Oregon.

That means Wolverine coach Lloyd "What Has He Done For Us Lately?" Carr is sitting on the whoopee cushion, and people are asking Les Miles about that. A lot.

Why? Because Miles was an offensive lineman at Michigan, the school that also provided him with his first coaching opportunity. He may wear purple and gold, but he's said to bleed blue and gold.

Moreover, the name of the game in coaching is to always leave them wanting more. If he wins a national title with LSU, there will be nowhere for Miles to go but down. Michigan, meanwhile, is a storied program in apparent need of revival.

At any rate, Miles has wisely declined to even address the issue. Meanwhile, all he can do is enjoy what might be the best Tiger team ever.

Quarterback JaMarcus Russell, defensive back LaRon Landry as well as wide receivers Dwayne Bowe and Craig Davis all went in the first round of this year's NFL draft, but the Tigers simply reloaded with a vengeance. Now, they have two good QBs (Matt Flynn and Ryan Perrilloux) instead of one, RB Keiland Williams looks as if he might challenge Arkansas' Darren McFadden/Felix Jones duo as the SEC's best, the offensive line is stout and the defense if ferocious. Just ask then-No. 9 Tech, which was overwhelmed 48-7.

They even have a new Mike the Tiger, replacing the mascot that died last year. Chances are, Mike was a top-five recruit among tigers, with a great 40 time.

Virginia Tech has a reputation for quickness and a storied penchant for punt blocking, neither of which was much in evidence on Saturday night.

Maybe that was the problem -- LSU hardly ever punted. And if Les Miles is thinking about punting his current job at the the controls of a juggernaut, you won't hear it from him.
