When Ralph Friedgen named Jordan Steffy the starter for Maryland’s season opener, it raised a lot of eyebrows. Now, with Steffy injured, Chris Turner will get the start and Josh Portis will have more opportunities to play, but the controversy won’t go away all season.

Commentary: Friedgen named Steffy the starter because he felt he had performed the best in spring and summer practices. The decision was met with skepticism, as both Turner and Portis both seemed to have more talent to those who don’t watch practice every day.

Steffy’s 115 passing yards and two interceptions against Delaware did little to calm the dissenting voices. Portis and Turner each got some playing time in that game. It’s often said that if you have two quarterbacks, you have none. Well, if you have three quarterbacks, you’ve got a full-fledged disaster.

Steffy’s injury brings the quarterback depth chart back down to two, but the debate between Portis and Turner will surely rage all season. If neither steps up and produces, you can be sure Steffy will get the chance to reclaim his spot once his thumb heals. Ultimately, Friedgen has to hope one quarterback steps up so he can hand him the reins permanently. Otherwise, it’s going to be a drama-filled season in College Park.

Fan Pulse: Terrapins fans are torn between Portis and Turner, but all seem to be relieved that Steffy is out at quarterback. They aren’t happy he’s hurt, but welcome the change.

Injury Watch: As noted, Steffy injured the ligaments in his right thumb and is out for at least three weeks.
