The Miami Hurricanes' offense outscored the team's defense 31-21 in the annual spring game played this year at Fort Lauderdale's Lockhart Stadium. The scoring system enables the offense to receive one point for first downs - in addition to regular scores - and gives the defense points for stopping the offense on 3-and-outs, for turnovers and defensive scores.

Quarterback Kyle Wright was 10 of 13 for 159 yards and 2 touchdowns. Wide receiver Ryan Moore caught a 23 yard TD in the second quarter, and WR Darnell Jenkins received 38 yard TD pass in the third. Kirby Freeman, now firmly entrenched as the backup QB, went 7-18 with 109 yards and 2 interceptions.

Running back Derron Thomas had 6 rushes for 23 yards, as well as a 21 yard catch. RB Charlie Jones had 8 carries for 10 yards. Tyrone Moss, expected to start when the season starts, has been held out of spring practice while recuperating from an offseason shoulder surgery.

Jenkins had 4 catches for 72 yards. Balls were also distributed to fullback James Bryant (2 receptions-42 yards), WR Sinorice Moss (2-35), Moore (2-32) and Jones (2-9).

Head coach Larry Coker did express concern with the injury-riddled offensive line, which was missing starters Eric Winston, Tony Tella and Derrick Morse.

UM's defense returns 10 of the 11 starters from 2004. As a unit, they registered 8 sacks; Kareem Brown, Vegas Franklin and Bryan Pata had 2 each. Defensive end Calais Campbell and linebacker Romeo Davis led the defense with 5 tackles. Linebackers Jon Beason and Willie Cooper had interceptions. Beason came in as a safety, before switching to fullback and finally settling among the starting LBs.

Kicker Jon Peattie was 1 for 2 on 47-yard field goal tries, while punter Brian Monroe averaged 43.4 yards on 8 attempts.

Coker said cornerback Rashaun Jones will likely undergo a surgical procedure to repair a knee injury. Defensive tackle Teraz McCray sat out the scrimmage because of a sprained knee.
