The Miami Hurricanes made it official, surprising no one that Kyle Wright is now the starting quarterback. Head coach Larry Coker made the announcement today from the Coral Gables campus.

Wright is a redshirt sophomore originally from Monte Vista High School in Danville, California. Redshirt freshman Kirby Freeman from Brownwood HS in Brownwood, Texas is now the second-string QB.

Coach Coker stated, "I really like both players. We have two outstanding quarterbacks, and I don't know that I've ever been around a program that has two quality quarterbacks like we have here. We can win with both players. Kyle deserves the nod at this time. From our standpoint, Kyle is further ahead. He's been here an additional year and he has more knowledge of the offense. But Kyle knows he can't relax, and Kirby knows he can pour the heat on. They're both going to win a lot of football games for the University of Miami.

The 6'5", 208 lbs. Wright participated in 2 games during 2004. He completed 5 of 9 attempts for 30 yards. Last year, he wore jersey #16; This year, he will sport the #3.

Wright will get his first start for UM against the FSU Seminoles on Labor Day night (September 5) at Tallahassee.
