If one article about the Grady family wasn’t enough, you’re in luck. A few days ago, it was announced that Kelvin Grady, brother of recently jailed Kevin Grady, would be joining Michigan’s football team for the fall. He will have two years of eligibility remaining and takes up one of Michigan’s five unused football scholarships.

Normally, just being Kevin Grady’s brother wouldn’t merit much of a passing glance. After all, Kelvin's presence on the football team might be just what his older brother needs to get his life back on track. But Kelvin, not Kevin, is unique for another reason: Just three months ago, he left Michigan’s basketball program in search of a new opportunity. If you can recall the last time an athlete did that mid-career at the same school, it’d be surprising.

Grady originally claimed he had intended to play both sports at Michigan out of high school, but he fell out of favor with the style of play under basketball coach Jim Beilein this past season. After checking out his options, Grady apparently decided that basketball was in the rear-view mirror for him.

Grady isn’t exactly flying off the handle with this idea. He was an all-state running back in high school, and while quick, lean and likely to be a wide receiver for Rich Rodriguez, was athletic enough to amass 2,000 yards his senior year.

Under NCAA regulations, Grady will be capable of playing in the fall. Had he transferred to play basketball or football at another school, he would have had to sit for a year. That likely figured into his decision to remain at the school.

If you’d have assured Michigan fans a month ago that a former point guard would be putting on the winged helmet for the fall, there would have been groans about having to actually accept ex-Duke Blue Devil Greg Paulus on the roster. Thankfully, that will never have to happen with Paulus now a part of the Syracuse Orange.

Where one Grady likely leaves, another one comes in looking to fulfill the immense promise once considered to be a given.
