University of Minnesota kick returner Harold Howell was dismissed from the team for academic reasons.

Commentary: Head coach Tim Brewster said Tuesday that Howell was let go for both academic and team violations. It's a shame, because the 5-foot-8 speedster out of Jacksonville, Fla., averaged 23.1 yards on kick returns last season and was sure to improve on that average in the coming years.

Howell also appeared in games as a reserve receiver in 2007.
