Goodbye to Sylvester Croom: Five years ago, the Mississippi State Bulldogs made a good move in hiring Croom, the first African-American SEC head coach, to try and guide their team to a winning future. Though Croom’s bunch took quite a negative turn this season which prompted his resignation, it still doesn’t take away from the fact that the Bulldogs gave a stellar man a chance to right the ship. Croom’s teams always played hard and with toughness. He just couldn’t get the offense going in the right direction.

Speaking of offenses not going in the right direction. . .

The Auburn Tigers' miserable season comes to an end: The offensive soap opera that was Auburn this season finally ended after a 36-0 thrashing at the hands of the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Iron Bowl last weekend. This was the kind of season for Auburn that everyone involved in the program hopes to soon forget. After all, the Tigers averaged a whopping 11.6 points per game in SEC matchups during the season, reinforcing the notion that their offense scored about as often as Jared from Subway.

The good thing moving forward is that they will likely -- "likely" being the operative word -- have the same offensive coordinator all season in 2009 and enough talent on both sides of the ball to make a run. If not, then Tommy Tuberville’s job will be in jeopardy.

Florida versus Alabama in the SEC championship: We’re talking about a team with speed that flies all around the field against one that likes to smash you to death. Which wins?

Can’t wait to find out this weekend.

Bobby Petrino has Arkansas going in the right direction: Sure, Petrino’s crew dropped four of its last seven. But then you realize that those losses were all decided by seven points or fewer (most of them fewer). Finally, the dramatic way the Razorbacks came from behind to defeat the LSU Tigers, 31-30, last Saturday is the kind of thing that helps a team gain confidence in the offseason.

Petrino is likely starting to feel as if he’s gaining distance from the whole Atlanta Falcons debacle.

Phil Fulmer goes out on a good note: Fulmer departed Tennessee in a positive way by defeating the Kentucky Wildcats in his final game, 28-10. He’s a good coach whose time had come and gone in Tennessee. Guess is that you’ll see him pick up somewhere in the next couple of seasons.
