Omaha, Neb., fullback C.J. Zimmerer announced his verbal commitment to Nebraska on Tuesday evening. The commitment came one day after primary recruiter and offensive line coach Barney Cotton extended an offer.

“It was kind of news to my ears that they even recruited fullbacks anymore,” Zimmerer said. “I don’t see it much more, but I’m definitely excited. It’s big shoes to fill with all that tradition and those guys like the (Joel) Makovickas and (Cory) Schlesinger.”

Last year at Omaha Gross Catholic High School, the 6-foot-1, 215-pounder ran for 701 yards and 11 touchdowns on 88 carries. Zimmerer is the fourth commitment for the Huskers’ 2009 recruiting class.

Although no official records were found on other offers, Iowa and Iowa State were reportedly interested in Zimmerer.

COMMENTARY: Slowly but surely, head coach Bo Pelini is filling up his recruiting class for next year. Zimmerer is the second Nebraskan to commit to the school.
