Nebraska recruiting hits a temporary lull

Disciples of recruiting know that their religion seems to be an ebb-and-flow thing. Their team may go many months between acquiring commitments, but then the proverbial floodgates open. Virginia Tech is a prime example: Before June 7, the Hokies only had one commitment. Since then, though, they have landed five more (four for 2009, and one for 2010).

That’s a bit on the extreme side, but you get the point.

It’s only been since May 16 when Nebraska got its last commitment in Texas running back Dontrayevous Robinson, so perhaps there’s a jumping-the-gun mentality with fans who wonder where the rest are. Between the end of April and the middle of May, the Huskers grabbed verbals from four players.

With the recent recruiting losses of Texas running back Kalvin Guyton (to Texas A&M) and highly rated Maryland defensive end Sean Stanley (to Penn State), one would think the Huskers’ luck had run out, at least temporarily.

Looking back at this year’s recruiting class, there was a two-month moratorium between cornerback David Whitmore’s commitment and that of linebacker Sean Fisher, who committed in June of last year. Following Fisher was ATH John Levorson, TE Tyson Hetzer and C Ricky Henry, all four declaring in that same month.

That little flood was followed by a two-month mini-drought before DE Cameron Meredith, and from there -- with the exception of November -- the Huskers got at least one commitment every month until signing day. December came and Nebraska landed four commitments (during the throes of a head coaching change, no less); in January, the Huskers added eight, and then they picked up five more in February.

If last year is any template, one can expect possibly one or two commitments between now and the season premiere against Western Michigan on Aug. 30. Another two or three will probably give coach Bo Pelini and company the affirmative wink prior to the time the team hits its conference schedule against Missouri in early October. From then, it should snowball.

If the former LSU defensive guru can take the Huskers bowling after this season, the wave of popularity Nebraska will enjoy will most certainly attract more top players.
