The Nebraska Cornhuskers have a long list of holes to fill at various positions on both offense and defense, but fortunately, cornerback is not on that list. That's because the Cornhuskers will be fielding two experienced upperclassmen on the outside. Senior Zack Bowman will be patrolling one side while junior Cortney Grixby will line up on the other.

Bowman is a converted safety with plenty of size and speed and a year of starting experience under his belt. The Alaska native and former JUCO transfer snagged two interceptions last season and has a knack for making plays against the run. His counterpart Cortney Grixby is the lightning that goes along with Bowman's thunder. Grixby is more of a finesse player, as evidenced by his ability to return punts (he led the team in punt return yardage last year with 333 yards). Though he only came down with one interception last season, he is poised to make more of an impact in the defensive backfield in '06.

So now we know that the Nebraska Cornhuskers are set at the cornerback position in terms of starters, but what about the backups? According to head coach Bill Callahan two guys have already begun to step up thus far in spring drills. Chris LeFlore and Titus Brothers have been making big strides in the first few practices and look to be solidifying their status as top backups to Bowman and Grixby.

This is all very good news for a Nebraska defensive unit that ranked 43rd in the nation against the pass last year, allowing just under 208 passing yards per game. Those numbers aren't bad, but there is always room for improvement. Fortunately, having two seasoned starters and a couple of solid young backups at the cornerback position is the exact recipe needed to help take the Cornhuskers from the middle of the pack to the top of the heap.
