Showing resiliency and courage on the way to a 27-20 overtime victory against Iowa State in Memorial Stadium may have been amongst the high water marks for Nebraska in 2005, but a triumph over the Cyclones in Ames on October 7th could be merely expected by some in Big Red country. Don't think for a second that ISU will allow the 'Huskers to steam roll them this fall as they have in years past, though.

In fact, if the Nebraska Cornhuskers aren't in their best form, the Iowa State Cyclones have more than enough offensive weapons to hand them a loss. How, you ask? Well, let's start with redshirt junior quarterback Bret Meyer, now in his third year as a starter for Iowa State.

The veteran QB completed just under 62 percent of his passes and had 19 touchdown tosses last season. Meyer has a pair of outstanding wide receivers to connect with this fall in Todd Blythe and Austin Flynn. Blythe, a red-shirt junior, averaged nearly 20 yards per catch on his way to 1,000 receiving yards in 2005. Flynn, a red-shirt senior, led ISU with 56 catches last year.

Stevie Hicks, who rushed for 545 yards despite missing three games last fall, could be a major factor running the ball if he stays healthy. Hicks, a red-shirt senior, had 1,062 rushing yards in the 2004 season.

Although their early season schedule is certainly no picnic, the Cyclones should be more than ready to go when the 'Huskers make their visit. ISU has ultra challenging back-to-back road games at Iowa and Texas on September 16th and 23rd, respectively. A week before the 'Huskers come to town, however, they host Northern Iowa.

The Cyclones look to have the offense that can give any defense, including Nebraska, some headaches. But, Nebraska shouldn't have too much trouble moving the ball themselves. Iowa State lost ample talent on the defensive side and Nebraska can certainly take advantage. If Zac Taylor can avoid being picked off by the likes of DeAndre Jackson, a senior defensive back who had five interceptions in 2005, or being sacked by players up front like Brent Curvey (seven sacks in 2005) and Shawn Moorehead (six sacks in 2005), scoring between 28 and 38 points in this game is a strong possibility.

A win against the Cyclones could put the Nebraska Cornhuskers on the fast track to the Big 12 championship game. They just have to go to Ames and get the job done in any way possible.
