Both starting quarterbacks were sharp, but in the end, the Cleveland Browns edged the Detroit Lions 21-13.

Browns starter Trent Dilfer outdueled Joey Harrington. Dilfer completed 9 of 13 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown. Harrington was 5 of 6 for only 46 yards. The Detroit Lions backup, Jeff Garcia, also had a decent showing. He completed 9 of 15 passes with a touchdown and and two interceptions, but added 36 yards on the ground on just four carries. Kevin Jones ran the ball well for the Lions, amassing 33 yards on 6 carries.

The game showcased the talents of several talented young receivers. Oft injured Lions receiver Charles Rogers had an impressive showing, snagging two receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown. Roy Williams added a reception for 13 yards. Mike Williams added two catches for 26 yards. The Cleveland Browns' rookie wide out, Braylon Edwards, had a very solid performance in his first outing. He caught three passes for 14 yards and a touchdown.
