Wide receiver and kick returner Jerome Mathis is no longer a free agent. The Washington Redskins have nabbed the former Pro Bowl returner.

Commentary: Jerome Mathis was a Pro Bowl return man back in 2005 while playing for the Houston Texans. Since then he’s had some bad luck with injuries. Further, there have been some run ins with the law, such as when his pit bull chewed through a fence and scared some people and when he was charged with assaulting his pregnant common law wife.

The charges against his common law wife were dropped on her own request. Still, that was not a good situation.

Mathis certainly has talent as a kick returner, and has been demonstrating this for some time now. After all, we’re talking about a man that broke the NCAA record for career kickoff return average while attending college at Hampton. So if he can stave off injuries and stay out of trouble, this might end up being a helpful, low profile signing.
