The New York Jets and safety Kerry Rhodes have come to terms on a five-year extension worth $33.5 million, including $20 million in guaranteed money.

Commentary: Rhodes, a fourth-round pick in 2005, has quickly become one of the better safeties in the NFL and the Jets overpaid to keep him off the market. The franchise designation for safeties this is year is worth $4.4 million, so this contract pays Rhodes $2 million more per year than the top five safeties made last season. It's just a continuation of the Jets' trend this offseason of forking over big money, but better to keep good, young players than overpay for washed-up veterans. Earlier this offseason, the Jets guaranteed an aggregate $72 million in deals with DT Kris Jenkins, OG Alan Faneca, OT Damien Woody and DE Calvin Pace.
