Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune is reporting that Chiefs DE Jared Allen is in Minneapolis, and the Vikings and Chiefs are working on a trade to send the veteran pass rusher to the Vikings.

Allen was designated Kansas City's franchise player, meaning if the Vikings were to give Allen a tender offer, the Chiefs have the right to match that. If they choose not to, they would receive the Vikings' first-round picks in 2007 and 2008. However, Zulgad reports the Vikings and Chiefs are working on a trade-and-sign deal, in which the Vikings would likely be giving Kansas City the 17th overall pick in this year's draft, and one of their two third-round selections. If that deal is consummated, Allen would sign a long-term extension with the Vikings.

Commentary: The Vikings lost out on DE Justin Smith earlier in the free agency period, and with Kenechi Udeze being diagnosed with a form of leukemia and Erasmus James struggling to stay healthy, Minnesota is in need of a veteran defensive lineman to complement Kevin Williams and Pat Williams. Allen, and his 43 career sacks, could be the strong pass rusher Minnesota covets.
